§ Field Notes
About Roaring Brook Falls.
On Roaring Brook, east of Route 73 in Keene Valley, between the Cascade Pass and the village. Roaring Brook Falls drops over a ledge on the lower flank of Giant Mountain, and the view from Route 73 is one of the more visible roadside falls in the High Peaks corridor.
Two ways to see it. The first is from the marked roadside pull-off, which gets you a clean view across the brook from the car. The second is the short 0.3-mile marked trail that climbs gently along Roaring Brook to the base of the falls, where the water hits the lower pool. It's an out-and-back, relatively flat, and works for kids and casual hikers.
For experienced hikers, the trail beyond the base continues up Giant Mountain's south side as part of the Roaring Brook Falls trail to the Giant Mountain summit, which is a serious High Peaks day. Year-round access. Expect ice on the trail and the spur road through April. Best for travelers crossing Route 73 who want a five-minute trailhead break or a 30-minute leg-stretcher between Keene Valley and Lake Placid.
