About Pursuits & Outdoors in the Adirondacks.

What outdoor activities are available in the Adirondacks?+

The Adirondack Park supports hiking on more than 2,000 miles of marked trails, paddling on 3,000+ lakes and ponds, fly and warm-water fishing, alpine and Nordic skiing, rock and ice climbing, mountain biking, road cycling, and golf. Browse the activity directory at adirondackregion.com/pursuits — each pursuit has its own atlas with maps and current conditions.

Do I need a permit to hike in the Adirondacks?+

Most Adirondack trails are free and require no permit. The exceptions: the High Peaks Wilderness AMR / Ausable Club parking shuttle requires a free same-day reservation; some campsites and lean-tos have fee or registration requirements. Check the trail page on adirondackregion.com/pursuits/trails for current DEC requirements before you go.

When is the best time to hike the Adirondack 46 High Peaks?+

Late June through early October is the safest, easiest window — trails are dry, alpine zones are accessible, and waters are crossable. Mud season (mid-April to early June) closes many high-elevation trails per DEC advisory. See the live 46er atlas at adirondackregion.com/46ers for trip planning by peak.

Where do I launch a canoe or kayak in the Adirondacks?+

There are hundreds of public launches across the Park — DEC hand-launches (free, often unmaintained), state-managed boat launches (free, paved), and town/private launches. Browse mapped paddle launches with directions and lake details at adirondackregion.com/lakes.

Are dogs allowed on Adirondack trails?+

Most Adirondack trails allow leashed dogs. Restrictions apply on alpine summits (above 3,500 ft, leash-required to protect alpine vegetation), in the AMR / Ausable Club private trail system (no dogs), and at some swimming beaches. The trail detail page on adirondackregion.com lists per-trail dog rules.
