Adirondack Rail Trail · Lake Placid Trailhead

260 Station Street in Lake Placid, at the old train depot. This is the eastern end of the Adirondack Rail Trail, the converted rail bed that now runs 34 miles west to Tupper Lake through Saranac Lake. The full corridor is open as of Phase 3 to Tupper. The path is wide, hard-packed, and graded for rail, which means it's the rare Adirondack trail that works for road bikes, jogging strollers, and wheelchairs. The Lake Placid to Saranac Lake segment is the most-used stretch, running roughly 8 miles one way along Lake Flower and through the woods. Bike it both directions in a morning and lunch in Saranac Lake village in the middle. Winter use is snowmobile and ski. NYS DEC manages the corridor; the Adirondack Rail Trail Association handles amenities. Year-round access from this trailhead. Free parking. No facilities at this end, so use the village before you start.
