Adirondack Carousel

On Depot Street in Saranac Lake, behind the train station and a short walk from the Riverwalk. The carousel is the rare community art project that actually got finished and runs as a working ride: every animal is a hand-carved Adirondack species (black bear, loon, deer, otter, raven) rather than a horse, and the carving was done by local volunteers over years. One ride, one building, the entire visit takes about 15 minutes plus whatever time the kid spends choosing the animal. That's the right length for the audience. The building is heated, which makes this the obvious move for a January afternoon in Saranac Lake when the temperature stops cooperating with whatever else you had planned. Programming follows the village calendar. Winter Carnival in February, St. Patrick's Day in March, Halloween, and Santa Saturdays in December all get themed sessions, often with hot chocolate. Best for kids under 8. Older children will be done in one ride. Year-round.
