Old Forge bills itself as the snowmobiling capital of the East, and the claim holds up: it anchors one of the largest interconnected trail systems in the Northeast — hundreds of club-groomed miles of corridor and secondary trail that thread north and east through Inlet, Raquette Lake, Long Lake, Indian Lake, and Speculator. From a single base you can ride point-to-point for days without repeating a mile.
The catch is timing. The trails are volunteer-groomed and cross wetland and private land that only opens once there's a hard freeze and real snow — usually late December through March, and never guaranteed.
