About The Mountaineer.
Route 73 in Keene Valley, on the road that runs from the Northway into the heart of the High Peaks. The Mountaineer has been operating here since 1979 and is the closest serious gear shop to the 46 High Peaks trailheads, which is why it's the de facto outfitter for the Adirondack climbing and backpacking community.
The inventory is the real product. Climbing: harnesses, helmets, carabiners, ropes, ice tools, technical footwear. Backpacking: tents, sleeping bags, stoves, hydration, first aid. Backcountry skiing: skis, boots, bindings, poles, avalanche safety gear. Fly fishing and trail running gear round out the warm-weather side. Brands skew technical: Black Diamond, La Sportiva, Patagonia, Darn Tough, plus the in-house line and the Adirondack-themed items.
Daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., year-round. Open hours line up with hikers heading out and coming back, which is intentional. Best for visitors who realize at the trailhead that they forgot the gaiters or the headlamp, and for serious climbers and skiers driving up from Albany or New York for High Peaks objectives.
