What you’re stepping into .
A family-friendly retreat beneath towering pines on the shores of Sacandaga Lake.
Beneath a canopy of 70 to 80-foot tall white pines, Moffitt Beach State Campground offers a classic Adirondack camping experience on the tranquil shores of Sacandaga Lake. This popular family destination provides a rustic ambiance across its 260 campsites, many of which are situated directly at the water's edge, offering immediate access to the lake's broad expanse. The campground's layout and natural setting invite visitors to settle into the quiet rhythms of forest and water, making it a beloved spot for generations.
Campers will find essential amenities designed for comfort and convenience, including hot showers and flush toilets, a trailer dump station, and a recycling center. A well-maintained sand beach provides a pleasant spot for swimming, though visitors should note that all swimming at DEC campgrounds is unsupervised. For those looking to enjoy a meal outdoors, a large picnic area with tables and fireplaces is available, alongside a pavilion for rent. Reservations for a stay can be made through ReserveAmerica, with the campground typically open from May 15 through October 12 each year. Guests are reminded to adhere to New York's firewood regulations, bringing only untreated wood from within a 50-mile radius to help prevent the spread of invasive pests.
Sacandaga Lake itself is a hub of activity for Moffitt Beach campers. A convenient boat launch makes it easy to explore the water, whether by motorboat, rowboat, or canoe, opening up opportunities for both leisurely paddles and more adventurous excursions. Anglers will appreciate the lake's reputation for fine fishing, with a diverse population including walleye, rainbow trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, and perch. Beyond the water, an informal nature trail winds through the campground, offering a gentle introduction to the local flora and fauna.
For those seeking more extensive explorations, the surrounding region provides ample hiking opportunities. The expansive Jessup River Wild Forest, bordering the campground, encompasses over 47,000 acres and offers miles of trails suitable for various skill levels. A particularly popular route is the Fawn Lake Trail, which also connects to the larger wild forest system, inviting deeper dives into the Adirondack backcountry.
Moffitt Beach is committed to accessibility, featuring nine designated accessible campsites (115, 117, 139, 197, 199, 234, 240, 243, 260) and two accessible shower buildings. Younger visitors can engage with the natural world through the Junior Naturalist Program, an outdoor classroom that uses games and activities to foster environmental appreciation, culminating in an embroidered patch.
The campground holds a rich history within the Adirondacks. The lands were once owned by Josiah Moffitt, a local mason and mill operator who settled here before 1840, with the beach area long serving as a popular picnic spot. Development of the modern campground began in 1932, with significant contributions from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), whose permanent camp was established near the present 4-H Camp site in 1934. The CCC's work continued until 1942. Initially featuring around 100 campsites, the campground doubled in size after the Village of Speculator requested expansion from the Conservation Department in 1955, shaping it into the beloved destination it is today.
