About Hudson River Trading Co..
The Hudson River Trading Co. occupies a venerable building on Main Street in North Creek, a structure that has stood since **1898**. Originally constructed as a livery stable, where horses were led up a ramp and wagons housed at street level, it served as a vital hub for travelers boarding trains. This rich history of service and transit was rekindled when the current family purchased the property on April 1, 1995, opening the mercantile to the public Thanksgiving weekend of **1996**. Since then, it has grown from filling the original 7,000 square feet across two floors to becoming a comprehensive resource for Adirondack living, rooted in a philosophy of "nature inspired" design.
Inside the main mercantile, visitors can wander through an extensive collection of housewares, unique lighting fixtures, and thoughtful accessories that evoke the spirit of the Adirondacks. The ground floor showcases table settings and garden features, while the historic stable area below houses an impressive selection of furniture crafted from regional materials like hickory, red cedar, and reclaimed barn timbers. These pieces are thoughtfully displayed alongside mountain-themed artwork, rustic lighting, and even a touch of taxidermy, all complemented by colorful, durable blankets from iconic brands such as Pendleton, Hudson Bay, and Woolrich, creating an authentic camp aesthetic.
Further expanding its community role, the Hudson River Trading Co. acquired the adjacent historic "Dr. Lee" building, transforming it into The Hungry Crow. This addition serves as a market and tasting room, embodying a commitment to "eating close to the source." The vision here is to champion local and regional producers, offering a curated selection of Adirondack bounty. Guests will find artisanal cheeses, pure maple products, decadent chocolate crafted right in town, and locally roasted coffees. During the warmer months, The Hungry Crow delights with fabulous soft-serve and hard ice cream, sourced directly from a regional dairy, providing a refreshing taste of the local landscape.
Beyond retail, the Hudson River Trading Co. extends its expertise through Adirondack Interior Services, assisting clients with design decisions for new construction or renovations. Their passion for restoration is evident in the careful renovation of the Dr. Lee building, which now also functions as a design center and a charming vacation rental. Overlooking Gore Mountain from the front porch and the Hudson River from the back, these rentals offer a unique stay on Main Street, placing guests within easy reach of North Creek's wine bars, grocery stores, and taverns. This commitment to preserving local architecture and fostering a vibrant community underscores the store's deep connection to its Adirondack home.
