Luzerne Campground and Day Use Area

Tucked away on the shores of Fourth Lake, a tranquil, non-motorized body of water in the Lake Luzerne area, this state campground offers a classic Adirondack camping experience for those seeking both traditional and equestrian-focused stays. The campground first opened its gates to visitors in 1967 with 167 sites, expanding in 1987 to its current total of 174 sites. Today, it provides 173 tent and trailer sites, each offering a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding natural beauty. What truly sets this campground apart are its dedicated facilities for horse owners, including 22 horse paddocks and 2 covered standing stalls, making it a unique destination for equestrian enthusiasts in the Adirondacks.

Campers will find essential amenities designed for comfort and convenience. Two shower buildings, located near Campsites 39 and 112, offer hot showers and flush toilets, with both buildings featuring wheelchair-accessible facilities. A trailer dump station and recycling center are also on-site. For daytime enjoyment, picnic areas are equipped with tables, fireplaces, and charcoal grills, and a picnic pavilion is available for rental, ideal for larger gatherings. For those bringing horses, specific regulations apply: a current negative Coggins certificate is required for all horses, and out-of-state owners must also provide a 30-day health certificate. Campers are responsible for maintaining their stalls and paddocks throughout their stay and before departure.

Fourth Lake itself is a focal point for recreation, with its strict no-motorboat policy ensuring peaceful paddling. Rowboats, canoes, and kayaks are welcome, and rentals are available directly at the campground for easy access to the water. A designated beach area invites swimming, though it is unsupervised by lifeguards. Anglers can cast their lines for bass, northern pike, yellow perch, bullhead, trout, and pumpkin seed. Beyond the lake, hiking opportunities abound, including the nearby Prospect Mountain. Its 1 5/8-mile red-marked trail leads to a summit offering a remarkable 100-mile view that can encompass five states on a clear day, a rewarding trek for those in reasonable physical condition.

The campground operates seasonally, welcoming guests from May 15 to September 13. Reservations for sites are conveniently made through ReserveAmerica. Visitors planning their trip should be mindful of New York’s firewood regulations, which restrict untreated firewood to a 50-mile radius to prevent the spread of invasive pests. While general campground rules and regulations apply, families with young children will appreciate the Junior Naturalist Program, transforming the outdoor environment into an engaging classroom with games and activities designed for ages 5-13.

Luzerne Campground's location in the Lake George region places it within easy reach of a variety of attractions. Nature lovers can find additional opportunities for whitewater rafting, tubing, and mountain climbing, while those seeking other diversions can explore nearby outlet malls, theme parks, theaters, and historic sites. This blend of serene natural immersion and convenient access to regional highlights makes it a versatile choice for an Adirondack getaway.
