§ Field Notes
About Jimmy's Peak.
This historic mountain, located near Warrensburg and Thurman, was officially named Jimmy's Peak in 2013. It honors James Cameron, a pioneer, woodsman, farmer, and justice of the peace who settled in Thurman in 1773 and is considered one of the town's founders. His historic homestead is situated across the Hudson River from the peak.
The mountain gained international recognition due to the U.S. Board on Geographical Names' decision to omit the apostrophe in 'Jimmy's' when formally designating the peak. This policy sparked debate among grammar enthusiasts worldwide and was even featured in an article by the Wall Street Journal.
Historically, James Cameron, known as 'Tory Jim,' was loyal to the British Monarchy during the Revolutionary War. Evidence of his observation tower, used to monitor American troop movements, can still be found on the peak. The official naming was the culmination of a two-year campaign to recognize Cameron's legacy.
