South Inlet is a flatwater paddling destination on Raquette Lake, known for its deep water and gentle current, making it ideal for mid-summer trips. Unlike many other streams in the area, it lacks beaver dams, providing an unobstructed experience suitable for paddlers of all skill levels, including families with children.
The trip begins at the widest point where the inlet empties into Raquette Lake, a historically significant spot said to be where the lake got its name. Paddlers head upstream, moving from a wide channel through a flood plain bordered by low fen grasses. This open environment offers less shelter from wind and sun, suggesting an early morning start is beneficial.
While bird sightings may vary, the area is noted for its diverse plant life. In addition to common wildflowers, large pitcher plants line the boggy shores. The river gradually tapers throughout the journey, becoming a relative trickle at the turnaround point, which is marked by a jumble of rocks blocking further upstream access.
