Middle Saranac Lake is the connector in the Saranac chain — 834 acres between Upper and Lower, with the village of Saranac Lake a short paddle south and the wild shoreline of Ampersand Bay to the northwest. It's a working lake: powerboats, fishing guides, camps with docks, and the Lock — a hand-operated channel lock that drops paddlers six feet into Lower Saranac. The state boat launch is off NY-3 on the north shore, and the lake sees steady motorized traffic in summer, but the bays and islands still fish well for bass and pike. If you're island camping or doing the full Seven Carries route, Middle Saranac is where you resupply or bail out — it's the last touch of civilization before the long paddle north.
