§ Field Notes
About Baker Mountain Trailhead.
This trailhead is located just outside the village of Saranac Lake, providing access to a straight-up-and-down hike. Parking is available on Forest Hill Avenue (Route 3) along Moody Pond, where visitors should carefully observe all parking signs and ensure tires are completely off the pavement due to strict enforcement.
The trail begins across the road from Moody Pond and immediately starts its ascent. Hikers will climb steadily over 0.9 miles to the summit, gaining approximately 900 feet in elevation. As the summit approaches, the trail offers two options: an officially marked path, which is steeper but provides more views, or an unmarked but well-worn trail to the left.
The official trail features rockier sections with views toward the High Peaks region. At the top, a large open clearing presents an expansive panorama of the area, and two summit markers can be found slightly beyond this viewpoint into the woods. This trail is an excellent introduction to High Peaks region hiking, offering significant Adirondack views for a moderate effort, and can easily be combined with a meal in nearby Saranac Lake.
