§ Field Notes
About Severance Hill.
This hike provides an enjoyable short jaunt through classic Adirondack woods to a beautiful view over Schroon Lake. The trail begins from a parking area near downtown Schroon Lake, leading hikers through tunnels under the Northway where echoes can be explored. After the tunnels, follow trail markers to avoid confusion and reach the trail register.
From the register, the trail ascends approximately 740 feet in elevation gain over 1.2 miles. Depending on the season and recent weather, parts of the trail might be muddy, and waterfalls or streams can be seen along the way. Hikers should be prepared for mosquitoes, especially during wet periods.
A final scramble leads to a rocky clearing at the top, offering an open view down toward Schroon Lake. This spot is ideal for a picnic or snack. After the hike, consider a side trip to the Schroon Lake town beach for additional views or a dip in the water.
