Lake George

Lake George — the 32-mile Queen of American Lakes — anchors the southeastern edge of the Adirondack Park, though most of its shoreline character leans resort-town rather than backcountry. The northern basin (north of Hague) runs quieter and wilder, with state-owned islands available for camping and long paddles between points that feel more remote than the mileage suggests. The lake's fame comes from depth, clarity, and a tourism infrastructure older than the Park itself — steamboats, lakeside grand hotels, and a boat launch density that turns summer weekends into a small-craft regatta. Brook trout and lake trout hold in the deeper water; smallmouth and largemouth bass work the shallower bays and island perimeters.
