The Best Adirondack Fire Tower Hikes.

The Adirondack fire tower network was built between 1909 and 1919 to spot smoke after a string of catastrophic burns. The state operated as many as 57 towers at the system's peak; today, 30+ have been restored by the DEC and volunteer groups, and many remain open for public climbs.

These are the best fire tower hikes for visitors. The picks span from short family-friendly hikes (Hadley, Pillsbury) to bigger half-day climbs (Snowy, Hurricane) to the iconic Lake George view from Black Mountain. Most reward you with 360° panoramas from the cab — views that the surrounding wooded summit alone wouldn't deliver.

The Adirondack Fire Tower Challenge (administered by the Adirondack Mountain Club) recognizes hikers who climb 23 designated towers in the Adirondacks and Catskills. Many of the picks below count.

  1. No. I1.8 mi up · 1,500 ft gain · 2,675 ft summit

    Hadley Mountain

Restored 1917 tower. The trail from Tower Road in Day climbs steadily through hardwood and oak with frequent ledges. Summit is open rock and tower — 360° from the southern Adirondacks north to the High Peaks. The standard 'first fire tower' for families, and the closest to the Saratoga / Albany commute.

  2. No. II2.6 mi up · 2,000 ft gain · 3,694 ft summit

    Hurricane Mountain

Closest fire tower to the High Peaks — the cab view spans every major peak from Marcy north. Steep finish across exposed bedrock for the last quarter-mile. Less crowded than Cascade despite a comparable view; right for someone who wants a 46er-style summit experience without the 46er checkbox.

  3. No. III3.9 mi up · 2,100 ft gain · 3,899 ft summit

    Snowy Mountain

The Park's southernmost High Peak that isn't on the 46 list. Wooded ascent breaks to a bedrock-and-cairn summit ridge; the tower views span Indian Lake, Raquette Lake, and the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. Closer in commitment to a 46er than to Hadley — pick this if you want a bigger day.

  4. No. IV2.4 mi up · 1,100 ft gain · 2,646 ft summit

    Black Mountain

Highest point above Lake George. Active sound-checked tower with sweeping shoreline views down the lake's western arm. Multiple approach trails; the south trail from Pike Brook Road is the most-used. The Lake George region's signature panoramic hike.

  5. No. V1.6 mi up · 1,400 ft gain · 2,821 ft summit

    Pillsbury Mountain

Short, steep, off the beaten path in the West Canada Lake Wilderness. The tower stands above spruce-fir krummholz at the summit. Often paired with a paddle of nearby Pillsbury Lake or Cedar Lakes — the surrounding waters make it a strong combined-activity day.
