§ Field Notes

About Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob.

This 223-acre preserve features a 0.7-mile orange trail with a steady ascent to a gazebo and scenic overlook, offering rewarding views of Lake George and the Adirondacks. The trail was renovated with rock steps and proper grading to reduce erosion, though sections can still be muddy and slippery. South of the gazebo, a blue trail provides a gentler hike through forests and meadows, leading to a seasonal waterfall loop with options to visit the base or the top. The preserve is open year-round, dawn to dusk, with designated parking. Leashed dogs are permitted, but motorized vehicles are not.
