About South Meadow Trailhead.
South Meadow functions as a significant trailhead and a complimentary option for parking and primitive camping, serving as an alternative to the ADK Loj. A series of primitive campsites are located along the access road, providing a convenient base for visitors looking to explore the surrounding wilderness.
From this location, hikers can embark on routes to prominent destinations within the Adirondacks, including New York's highest point, Mt. Marcy. Additional trails offer access to John's Brook Lodge, the expansive Great Range, and Mt. Van Hovenberg, accommodating various hiking preferences across all seasons.
Visitors utilizing the campsites at South Meadow are required to follow specific regulations designed to protect the natural environment. These rules include a strict prohibition on fires, the necessity to keep pets leashed on trails and at campsites, and guidelines for proper human waste disposal 150 feet from water sources or trails. All dishwashing and bathing activities must also be conducted 150 feet away from any water body, and glass containers are not permitted.
