Keene Valley Lodge.

For over 20 years, this historic lodge has anchored the center of Keene Valley, giving hikers, climbers, and backcountry skiers a comfortable place to return after long days in the Adirondack Great Range. The main building holds seven guest rooms and suites, most with private baths, and a large common area built around a granite fireplace. Breakfast comes with the rooms: scrambled eggs, fresh muffins, oatmeal bar, fruit, bread from the village's Dogwood Bakery, and locally roasted coffee.

Behind the lodge, the Ausable River flows past a firepit where guests stretch out in the evening. The front porch lines up rocking chairs for watching the hamlet's quiet comings and goings. Village restaurants and shops sit close enough that you can leave the car parked after checking in.

Next door, the Phelps Cottage offers private, fully equipped lodging for families or groups. The three-bedroom cottage operates as a vacation rental, with its own kitchen and living space, suited to those who want a longer stay or a bit more independence from the lodge's communal rhythm.

The location puts you twenty minutes from Lake Placid and walking distance from trailheads leading into the High Peaks Wilderness. Rock and ice climbing routes thread through nearby cliffs and crags, and winter brings backcountry skiing and snowshoeing across miles of unbroken terrain. The lodge closes from April 1 to May 15 and again from November 1 to December 25, following the shoulder seasons when the mountains sit between their busiest periods.

Keene Valley has drawn hikers, artists, writers, and naturalists for more than a century, and the lodge continues that tradition—a straightforward, unpretentious base camp where the focus stays on the peaks and trails just outside the door.
